Carbon Oasis is a carbon safe haven of Bangkok, aspiring to be the prototypal gateway of the future's carbon net zero ambitions. The project aims to answer the fundamental "flaw" of the existing urban fabric, still being extremely inefficient and highly polluting. Conversely, Carbon Oasis would not only create its own energy, but look to provide its excess energy and water surplus' back to the city and its surroundings. Taking parts of the existing city and implementing new concepts to inspire a change in the urban fabric and its people.
The concept "Carbon Oasis" symbolizes the project on two levels: its form and identity. The "Veil" fundamentally represents its organic, free-flowing roof structure, responsible for generating all of its energy. The "Oasis" represents the flow of life in creating as well as providing for its environment. The two concepts intertwine to symbolize the next stage for evolution of the urban fabric. Furthermore, visible aspects of the two concepts are then extracted and unified to create the visible, physical form of the building.
The building pushes boundaries of sustainable design and technology through its use of numerous passive and active systems. The key lies in the natural energy collection in both its primary resource usage of electricity and water. In order to minimize operational carbon, the project cuts all electrical usage from the grid and is fully run on renewable solar energy. The oasis acts as a water collecting lake, meeting all non-potable water usage year-round.
Additionally, alternative sustainable materials have been chosen. The only main key are the photo-voltaic tiles used to line the entire 13,000sqm roof, used to power the entire building. In reality, the other specs will be a luxury as the practicality of such substitutions are not as evident. Nonetheless, this will be key in symbolizing the potential for the future's architecture and technology by reducing embodied carbon massively in comparison to a similar standard building.
